Meet Zendo Project

Zendo Project was founded by mental health professionals and is supported by a team of volunteers that includes doctors, psychedelic therapists, nurses, social workers, healing facilitators and harm reduction experts.

After 10 years of incubation at Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), Zendo Project became its own non-profit in 2022. Zendo Project has trained thousands of sitters and cared for more than 7,000 individuals across four continents and served as a visionary model for compassionate psychedelic response. Join us in continuing to expand our impact!

Mission

Zendo Project offers professional harm reduction education to communities and organizations, and provides peer support services at events to help transform difficult psychedelic experiences – and other complex emotions – into opportunities for learning and growth.

Vision

We envision a world where communities are educated, resourced, and engaged in applying harm reduction principles to support individuals exploring psychedelic states; recognizing that challenging experiences can be opportunities for self-exploration and healing.

What We Do

Psychedelic care and emotional support at events

We provide harm reduction and peer support services at more events around the world. Our skilled team provides compassionate, non-judgmental care for guests experiencing emotional & psychological distress— no matter the cause.

Education and consultation

We are expanding our education program to reach more communities, offering trainings and workshops virtually and around the country. We provide consultation services to other organizations to ensure that harm reduction services are more accessible and available.

Promote safer psychedelic use through policy and advocacy efforts

We advocate for the wide-spread adoption of harm reduction services at psychedelic events and festivals, demonstrating the need for harm reduction to be recognized as an essential, integral component of event safety for large gatherings — ultimately developing safety standards and expanding the demand for harm reduction services.

Zendo Project’s 4 Principles of Psychedelic Care

Safe Space

Foundational human need; essential for healing and thriving

Sitting, Not Guiding

Being present; allowing one’s inner guide to lead the way

Talk Through, Not Down

Leaning into the experience; allowing it to occur; letting go

Difficult is Not Necessarily Bad

Difficult experiences can be our greatest teachers

Stephen Bagley

Board Member

In 2012, he began organizing and running psychedelic harm reduction services at festivals in Northern California. Since joining Zendo Project in 2017, he has supervised harm reduction teams at numerous events in the US and abroad. Steve believes that Zendo Project’s contribution extends beyond the festival environment in two important ways: by providing critical hands-on training and education to volunteers, and by serving as a unique model for how individuals and organizations can respond to—and support—those experiencing psychedelic emergencies or acute emotional distress unrelated to substance use. He believes Zendo Project’s training model can bridge a gap in the way mental health support is delivered in a real-world setting, with great potential to transform how communities care for the most vulnerable among us during times of crisis and grief. Steve is passionate about the healing potential of psychedelics and is particularly interested in the use of these medicines to treat end-of-life anxiety in patients diagnosed with terminal illness. He works in nonprofit healthcare development for a major research hospital.
